Parnell - July 2021
Our Away Walk in July took us on a tour of Parnell, visiting the Holy Trinity Cathedral (closed), although we did get access to St. Mary's Church. A walk down St Stephens Ave, down onto Hobson Bay and up the hill to the Rose Gardens, then along to Britomart and the Wynyard Quarter to enjoy a snack. Thanks to Terry for the organization. |
Waiheke - June 2021
Our Away Walk for June took us to Matiatia on Waiheke, following a trail through the reserve to the lookout then looping into Oneroa for a late lunch. A pleasant day in the sunshine. Thanks to Warwick for the organization. |
Orakei Basin - May 2021
A stormy start to the Away Walk but it soon cleared to a sunny day. Thanks to Terry for the organisation |
Mt. Eden - April 2021 A cool day for our Away Walk but we soon warmed up with all the hills getting to the top of Mt. Eden. thanks to Warwick for the organization |
Monte Cecilia Park - March 2021
A false start this year with Lockdown interfering but this short but pleasant walk around Monte Cecilia Park in Hillsborough resulted in a large turnout. |
Hamilton Gardens - November 2017 A sunny start to the day as we assembled at the Squash Club for our bus trip to Hamilton. It was fascinating to see the development over the years, particularly the themed rooms of gardens. A great day out - even the rain held off until we were on the bus for the return journey. Thanks to Sam and Auckland Bus Co for the transport - there and back without any evictions. Thanks to Neil for the suggestion and organisation. |
Oakly Creek - October 2017
A fine morning to assemble at Pt. Chevalier again - although the wind was cool. We headed west this time to the Rainbow walkway, underneath the new motorway flyovers and the new wavy bridge over Oakley Creek, giving access to the rear of Unitec. A return at the end to The Zuu for their great coffee and muffins. Another successful organization from Neil. |
Devonport - September 2017
We once again, ignored the forecast apart from arming ourselves with coats and umbrellas. It turned out to be a pleasant day in the village and walk to the Devonport Museum. Plenty there to keep everyone interested, along with some of the pioneer history and changes to the landscape during the early years. With a group of oldies, a lot of the exhibits were reminders of growing up in Auckland. Thanks to Neil for organising this trip into his boyhood. |
Hobson Bay - August 2017
Another day when the forecast was for rain. Fortunately it was clear at the station and brighter over the city so we managed to do the walk mostly in sunshine. We did get a heavy shower as we entered Hobson Park but shelter at the clubrooms was close by. Thanks to Warwick for organising the walk, and Maureen for being the substitute leader in Warwick's absence. |
Point Chevalier - July 2017
The forecast indicated a rainy day and the light rain on the way to the Squash Courts suggested we may call the day off. However, a brightening sky in the east looked promising so we chanced it. We completed the walk with a light shower towards the end, but conditions were pleasant throughout. A coffee at a new establishment had most people eloquent about their muffins. |
Hobsonville - June 2017
A fine day for a walk around this fast changing area. Don't use the GPS to get here as the maps bear little resemblance to reality, explaining the late arrival of a small group. Some good progress on the boardwalks promising a great shoreline walk in the future. Into the Catalina cafe for coffee at teh end of a pleasant morning. Thanks to Jan and Yvonne for organising the day. |
Jaggers Bush - May 2017
The forecast wasn't great, but the morning began overcast. Unfortunately as soon as we started the rain appeared, although it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of walking the streets and exploring the new boardwalk around the bay. A tour through the aviation museum of MOTAT to round off then up the Pt. Chev for coffee. Thanks to Warwick for the organisation . |
Pukekohe - April 2017
A pleasant trip to the extent of our SuperGold card travel on the trains. It's been a few years for many of the members since they were at Pukekohe. An interesting day seeing the development of the country town as it is now - probably similar to Henderson in the '60's. Thanks to jenni for her suggestion of the trip. |
Rangitoto Island - March 2017
A walk to the crater of our newest volcano. Fortunately we had a fine day without being too hot - pleasant walk through the bush and along the boardwalk around the side. Even a grovel through the caves on the way down. The wasps at the top were the only nuisance. thanks to Warwick for the organisation. |
Waiheke Sculptures - February 2017
A return to the island for the annual sculpture trail. Members with local knowledge assured us that the weather on Waiheke is totally different to the mainland, but this was not the case this time - drizzle all day! Most persevered and enjoyed the range of sculptures and the many views. Thanks to Warwick for organising the walk. |
Cornwallis - January 2017
The first Away Walk celebrated the return for the year with a BBQ on the beach. A warm, pleasant day. Thanks to Warwick for organising, Terry & Sheena for the BBQ provisions. photos to follow |
Waiheke Island - November 2016
Despite the forecast storm in Auckland a group of intrepid walkers took the coastal path around the west of the island to Oneroa. Only one short shower on the journey but we had fantastic views into the bays and back to the brooding city. Thanks to Warwick for organising the walk. |
Inner City Walkway - April 2016
An overcast day for the walk which made good conditions. Catching the train to Grafton provided adventures for some, but we all managed to enjoy the exploration of Grafton gulley and the Lightpath (as it's officially named). thanks to Warwick for the organization. |
Auckland Botanical Gardens - January 2016
A sunny day and a new collection of sculptures to view and enjoy. Below is a collection of photos taken n the day. |
Craigavon Park - December 2015
A stroll alongside the Manukau Harbour then down through Craigavon Park. As it was the final Away Walk for the year we celebrated with a BBQ at the park. |
Tiritiri Matangi - November
A blustery day, cold, strong winds, but a large group was looking forward to a day on the sanctuary. Unfortunately the sea conditions were too rough and the ferry captain cancelled the service. After a coffee at Silverdale we enjoyed a short walk around Orewa estuary and lake. |
Cascades - Waitakere - September A warm, sunny morning for our trek around some of the bush tracks in the Cascades Park. |
Domain & Art Gallery - August An overcast day for a stroll through the Auckland Domain, Grafton Gulley and through the University to the Art Gallery. A good tour by one of the volunteers, with a fascinating exhibition "In Pursuit of Venus" |
Hobsonville & Greenhithe Bridge - July
After stormy night the day turned out sunny and warm. Some high water on a small part of the walkway but a pleasant walk over the Upper Harbour Bridge to Greenhithe. |
Sanders Reserve & Bike Park, Paremoremo - June
A walk around one of Auckland's newest parks on the shores of the inner harbour. A fine, crisp morning with plenty of great views and interesting sculpture in the park. |
Colin Kerr-Taylor Memorial Reserve - May
A bush walk through one of the small reserves of Auckland - this one on Taylors Road Waimauku. It is currently managed by the Forest and Brid Society, and features some wonderful stands of Kauri and Kahikatea. Unfortunately not too many birds observed or heard, but an enjoyable guided walk through the trails by Yvonne, one of our members and one of the donors of the land to the Society. |
Mt Hobson, Mt St John - April A train trip to Newmarket, a sunny day and two mountains to conquer. A challenge from the new organizer of the Away Walks, but these two landmarks were an easy walk for most of the group. Great views from them both. Quite a few commented that having lived in Auckland for many years that they had never before been on those slopes. |
Cornwall Park - March An overcast day to begin following the cyclone, but we still had a pleasant walk around the park and up onto the monument. A wander through the observatory at the end to view the displays. A good day in one of Auckland's gems. |
Waiheke Island Sculpture Trail - February
Utilising public transport to enjoy a pleasant day at Waiheke to view the artworks. Overcast for the time but better than the sun blazing on us as had been the case over the past weeks. |
