Sunday Walks
Tawharanui Regional Park - February 2016
The forecast was for the tail of the cyclone to bring rain. We had overcast conditions with a couple of very light showers. Humidity was extreme though, leaving us saturated by the end of the walk. Over the hill to the South Track, up and down the hills but great views. A leisurely break, a couple more hills then relatively flat through bush (plenty of birds) to lunch at Takatu Point. We resumed along the North Track back to the carpark, using the Ecology Trail to the foreshore and along the beach. A quick swim for a few and Jenni invited us back to her holiday house for tea and fresh pikelets. Yum! |
Lake Wainamu, Bethell's Beach - January A hot day for the good number of walkers over the sand dunes to the waterfall at Lake Wainamu. The trails through the bush were a welcome cool break from the heat, as was the coffee break at the waterfall. Back along the other side of the lake then along the stream bed to the carpark. A welcome shady tree to sit under for lunch. |
Cascades to Waitakere Dam - November
A cool morning to begin but soon developed into a warm sunny day. Good track conditions initially on the Upper Kauri and Cascades tracks, but once we crossed the stream the track became steep, plenty of tree roots and muddy after the recent rain. It was a relief to get onto the well maintained Fenceline track to the top of the dam. A break for morning tea, then onto the Tramline, through the tunnel and into some rough track again to connect to the Anderson track to return to the carpark. This had plenty of steps (fortunately descending) and was quite muddy in parts. Plenty of Kauri in the park to admire. A debrief at the Swanson Station for coffee and lunch was a good conclusion to the day. |
